Day 26
Romans 5:5 (NET)
And hope does not disappoint, because the love
of God has been poured out in our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
of God has been poured out in our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Nearness is a marker of love. Someone who loves you is close enough to pay attention to your life, they are present and available. They are not distant or aloof, but close and near. They show up for the important things, participate in the mundane and remember details. Even those who love us but live far away find a way to stay near through technology, letters, phone calls, visits, and paying attention. Those who love us stay near.
God says that he loves us - and He shows it. He came a great distance - from heaven to earth - and demonstrated His love on the cross. But he didn’t just leave it at that. He came even nearer! After Jesus ascended into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit and now God Himself dwells WITHIN us. You cannot get any nearer than that!
Here in Romans 5:5, it says that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been “poured out”. That is abundance!
In the Old Testament, where the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was foretold and promised (check out Joel 2:28-29 and Isaiah 32:15), the picture of the result included abundance! A desert becoming a fertile field and a field growing into a forest, dreams, visions, and prophesy - abundance!
Pouring out can also be thought about as abundance. God’s love isn’t carefully measured. It isn’t contained, collected or closely monitored - it is POURED out - freely, generously, and with plenty to spare.
And that is how God loves us - freely, generously, and with plenty to spare. There is an abundance of God’s love! And He is pouring it out into our hearts via the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Focus for today:
Maybe today, your heart is feeling a bit more like a desert than a fertile field. Or maybe the “pouring” feels a bit more like a trickle than a generous dousing. Our perception of God’s love doesn’t change the reality of it, but God cares for us and He wants us to know, feel and experience His love.
If you are longing to know a bit more of God’s love for you today, why not ask Him to help you experience it? After all, one of the things the Holy Spirit does for us is to teach and remind us of the truth and the truth is that God loves you like crazy! Ask him to remind you of his love for you today.
