July 26, 2026 - Psalm 51 Part 1

Psalm 51:1–19 (NET)
51:1 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your loyal love!
Because of your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts!

  • Mercy on me: no claim to this favor from God.
  • Loyal love: God’s covenant – we still belong.
  • Your great compassion: the character of God.

51:2 Wash away my wrongdoing!
Cleanse me of my sin!
51:3 For I am aware of my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.

  • Recognition of needing to be cleansed.

51:4 Against you—you above all—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So you are just when you confront me;
you are right when you condemn me.

  • Sinned against the LORD above all!
  • This is true repentance. Repentance should not be driven by loss or consequences.
  • If you are all in on something you will desire correction.

51:5 Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.

  • David is making a statement about the holiness of God.

51:6 Look, you desire integrity in the inner man;
you want me to possess wisdom.

  • It is not about “David” but who God wants David to be.

51:7 Sprinkle me with water and I will be pure;
wash me and I will be whiter than snow.

  • Hyssop: the applicator or brush. A symbol of purification.

51:8 Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven!
May the bones you crushed rejoice!

  • Ultimate joy of being forgiven… the depth of God’s love.

51:9 Hide your face from my sins!
Wipe away all my guilt!

  • David is aware of the closeness of God.

51:10 Create for me a pure heart, O God!
Renew a resolute spirit within me!

  • How does God create? By His word and by His breath.
  • Let His word create a pure heart in us.
  • Let His Spirit saturate us.
