2 Samuel 16 – The Story of Mephibosheth
Pastor Logan – November 1, 2026
2 Samuel 16:1–4 (NET) David Receives Gifts from Ziba
16:1 When David had gone a short way beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him. He had a couple of donkeys that were saddled, and on them were two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred raisin cakes, a hundred baskets of summer fruit, and a container of wine.
16:2 The king asked Ziba, “Why did you bring these things?” Ziba replied, “The donkeys are for the king’s family to ride on, the loaves of bread and the summer fruit are for the attendants to eat, and the wine is for those who get exhausted in the desert.” 16:3 The king asked, “Where is your master’s grandson?” Ziba replied to the king, “He remains in Jerusalem, for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will give back to me my grandfather’s kingdom.’ ” 16:4 The king said to Ziba, “Everything that was Mephibosheth’s now belongs to you.” Ziba replied, “I bow before you. May I find favor in your sight, my lord the king.”
PERSPECTIVE: David is deeply wounded and physically exhausted.
ZIBA: Former servant of Saul
DAVID asks WHY have you brought these gifts?
ZIBA was the CARETAKER of the supplies, not the OWNER.
DAVID asks WHERE is your master’s grandson?
Would MEPHIBOSHETH try to take the Kingdom?
#1: We are very susceptible to making poor judgments when we are hurting or overwhelmed.
DO NOT make decisions when you are depleted.
DAVID makes a judgment that is difficult to turn back on.
SATAN DECIEVES
What was the truth?
2 Samuel 19:24–30 (NET)
19:24 Now Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, came down to meet the king. From the day the king had left until the day he safely returned, Mephibosheth had not cared for his feet nor trimmed his mustache nor washed his clothes.
19:25 When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?” 19:26 He replied, “My lord the king, my servant deceived me! I said, ‘Let me get my donkey saddled so that I can ride on it and go with the king,’ for I am lame. 19:27 But my servant has slandered me to my lord the king. But my lord the king is like an angel of God. Do whatever seems appropriate to you. 19:28 After all, there was no one in the entire house of my grandfather who did not deserve death from my lord the king. But instead you allowed me to eat at your own table! What further claim do I have to ask the king for anything?”
19:29 Then the king replied to him, “Why should you continue speaking like this? You and Ziba will inherit the field together.” 19:30 Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him have the whole thing! My lord the king has returned safely to his house!”
MEPHIBOSHETH risked his life mourning the king.
MEPHIBOSHETH was the victim of ZIBA’s deceit.
CONVICTION TIME:
ZIBA gave to DAVID what DAVID had already given away.
MEPHIBOSHETH knew his standing with the king.
Mephibosheth owed his life to King David, thus King David had his full allegiance and full loyalty. His belongings meant nothing, his success meant nothing.
MEPHIBOSHETH WAS CONSUMED WITH THE PROSPERING OF THE KING BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE HIS SOURCE OF LIFE CAME FROM.
May we be more like Mephibosheth…

May I find favor in your sight, my lord the king.”
PERSPECTIVE: David is deeply wounded and physically exhausted.
- Betrayed by his oldest living son
- Betrayed by his longtime adviser (25-30 years)
- Has returned to being a fugitive in the wilderness
- Weeping, barefoot, head covered, fresh wounds…
ZIBA: Former servant of Saul
- The servant who found Mephibosheth and brought him to David
- Charged to steward Mephibosheth’s property (2 Samuel 9:9-10)
DAVID asks WHY have you brought these gifts?
- ZIBA convinces David it is because of LOYALTY to DAVID
- DAVID is led to believe the motivation is to help him in this time of hurting.
ZIBA was the CARETAKER of the supplies, not the OWNER.
- 2 OPTIONS: Ziba was either sent by Mephibosheth or he stole from him.
DAVID asks WHERE is your master’s grandson?
- ZIBA tells a story and even quotes Mephibosheth.
Would MEPHIBOSHETH try to take the Kingdom?
- What was the character of Mephibosheth? Was the throne vacated? What was the condition of Mephibosheth?
#1: We are very susceptible to making poor judgments when we are hurting or overwhelmed.
- David was emotionally wounded and physically exhausted
DO NOT make decisions when you are depleted.
DAVID makes a judgment that is difficult to turn back on.
- We can have an increased desire to invite sin in when we are exhausted.
SATAN DECIEVES
- David needed to have a response, so he pronounces judgment.
- The overwhelmed need to numb themselves so they drink.
- The heartbroken need to do something so they turn to pornography.
- The stressed need to just keep grinding, keep working, invest more of themselves.
- Satan convinces us that when we are broken or hurting, we need to take immediate action to fix our problems.

MEPHIBOSHETH risked his life mourning the king.
MEPHIBOSHETH was the victim of ZIBA’s deceit.
CONVICTION TIME:
ZIBA gave to DAVID what DAVID had already given away.
- We come into the house of the LORD and give Him a fraction of our time, a little bit of money, and some good deeds so that we can buy the protection and goodwill of the King.
MEPHIBOSHETH knew his standing with the king.
- He knew that he deserved death and should have been executed.
- Not only did David allow him to live, but David gave him a seat at his table.
- Not only did David allow him to live, but David restored to him all of Saul’s belongings, property and wealth.
