The king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” He replied, “At your service.”3 The king asked, “Is there not someone left from Saul’s family that I may extend God’s kindness to him?” Ziba said to the king, “One of Jonathan’s sons is left; both of his feet are crippled.” 4 The king asked him, “Where is he?” Ziba told the king, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”
5 So King David had him brought from the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar. 6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed low with his face toward the ground. David said, “Mephibosheth?” He replied, “Yes, at your service.” 7 David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, because I will certainly extend kindness to you for the sake of Jonathan your father. I will give back to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will be a regular guest at my table.” 8 Then Mephibosheth bowed and said, “Of what importance am I, your servant, that you show regard for a dead dog like me?”
9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s attendant, and said to him, “Everything that belonged to Saul and to his entire house I hereby give to your master’s grandson. 10 You will cultivate the land for him—you and your sons and your servants. You will bring its produce and it will be food for your master’s grandson to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, will be a regular guest at my table.” (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)
11 Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do everything that my lord the king has instructed his servant to do.” So Mephibosheth was a regular guest at David’s table, just as though he were one of the king’s sons.
12 Now Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end. 13:2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betray Jesus. 13:3 Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 13:4 he got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself. 13:5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.

13:6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 13:7 Jesus replied, “You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things.” 13:8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 13:9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” 13:10 Jesus replied, “The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not every one of you.” 13:11 (For Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, “Not every one of you is clean.”)

13:12 So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you? 13:13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly, for that is what I am. 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet. 13:15 For I have given you an example—you should do just as I have done for you. 13:16 I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 13:17 If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Highlight the word “because”.

How much authority and power did Jesus have?

Why do you think Peter resisted?

Jesus asks, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” How would you answer that question?

Why does Jesus tell us to wash one another’s feet? Someone who loves you is close enough to pay attention to your life, they are present and available. They are not distant or aloof, but close and near. They show up for the important things, participate in the mundane and remember details. Even those who love us but live far away find a way to stay near through technology, letters, phone calls, visits, and paying attention. Those who love us stay near.

God says that he loves us - and He shows it. He came a great distance - from heaven to earth - and demonstrated His love on the cross. But he didn’t just leave it at that. He came even nearer! After Jesus ascended into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit and now God Himself dwells WITHIN us. You cannot get any nearer than that!

Here in Romans 5:5, it says that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been “poured out”. That is abundance!

In the Old Testament, where the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was foretold and promised (check out Joel 2:28-29 and Isaiah 32:15), the picture of the result included abundance! A desert becoming a fertile field and a field growing into a forest, dreams, visions, and prophesy - abundance!

Pouring out can also be thought about as abundance. God’s love isn’t carefully measured. It isn’t contained, collected or closely monitored - it is POURED out - freely, generously, and with plenty to spare.

And that is how God loves us - freely, generously, and with plenty to spare. There is an abundance of God’s love! And He is pouring it out into our hearts via the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Focus for today:
Maybe today, your heart is feeling a bit more like a desert than a fertile field. Or maybe the “pouring” feels a bit more like a trickle than a generous dousing. Our perception of God’s love doesn’t change the reality of it, but God cares for us and He wants us to know, feel and experience His love.

If you are longing to know a bit more of God’s love for you today, why not ask Him to help you experience it? After all, one of the things the Holy Spirit does for us is to teach and remind us of the truth and the truth is that God loves you like crazy! Ask him to remind you of his love for you today.

Everything in the universe belongs to God and He has no need of anything from us!

When we think about abundance, we have to consider that everything belongs to God. He created everything that exists out of absolutely nothing. With power like that, how could God ever experience a shortage? He does not need anything from us. When we realize the abundance God has, we can also know that He is more than able to provide for us and our needs.

Jesus tells us that God is concerned about our needs and uses natural things to remind us of his care for us in Matthew chapter 6. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” He goes on to say, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matt. 6:25-27 and 31-33)

God is more than able to provide for our needs. He has an unlimited supply of resources! He doesn’t need us to give Him things, rather He desires our humility, our attention and our dependence on Him.

Prayer Focus for today:
What do you think it means to “seek first his kingdom”? There isn’t much that beats a warm chocolate chip cookie and a glass of milk in my book. Whatever it is, God is willing and able to supply it!

Have you ever heard the phrase “you are blessed to be a blessing”? The idea is that we aren’t blessed in order just to keep it to ourselves, but rather we are blessed in order to share! God loves a cheerful giver. Why? Because God is generous Himself! He loves to give and bless abundantly!

Proverbs 11:25 says, A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. And here in our passage for today, Paul reminds us that God is able to bless us SO THAT we will have what we need to abound in every good work.

Blessings aren’t given to us just to make us happy, comfortable or whatever. We are blessed in order to do good! And remember, this isn’t only (or even primarily) talking about material things. God’s abundance has far more to do with His love for us, His offer to give us life, free us from sin, extend us mercy and forgiveness, give us gifts to build up His church, transform our hearts, and give us a place in his Kingdom. But even those gifts are meant to be shared!

When we share, we will see that instead of running short for ourselves, we have “all that we need”.

Prayer Focus for today:
Take some time to list the blessings that you have in your life. In Ephesians 3, Paul does not pray for changed circumstances, increased resources, or visible success. He prays for something deeper — that God would strengthen His people from the inside out.

Paul kneels before the Father, acknowledging that true abundance begins with dependence, not achievement. What He asks for flows “according to the wealth of God’s glory,” not human capacity.

The source of abundance is not what we can manage, but what God supplies through His Spirit.

At the center of this prayer is a startling request: that Christ would dwell in our hearts. Not visit. Not pass through. Dwell. To take up residence. Abundance is not found in adding more to our lives, but in making room for Christ to fully inhabit them.

As Christ dwells within us, we become rooted and grounded in love. This is our steadfast foundation. No matter what the world may throw at us, we have hope because we are rooted in His love. Paul prays that we might begin to understand the vastness of Christ’s love — its breadth, length, height, and depth — a love so great it surpasses what can be known.

And the prayer culminates here: that we would be filled to all the fullness of God. This is the language of abundance. Not excess for ourselves, but fullness shaped by His presence, His power, and His love.

Prayer Focus for today:
God, do a deeper work in me. I say this so that no one will deceive you through arguments that sound reasonable.

Paul and Timothy are writing a letter to the churches in Colossae and Laodicea, two ancient cities where they had established churches. They are sharing what is on their heart for those people and for others who would read this letter, so that includes us!

In the second verse, Paul expresses his goal for people and begins by saying that he wants people to be “knit together in love”, that is - connected to each other, bound together by love for God and for one another and he wants them to be encouraged. In addition, he wants people to be rich - excellent! :) But before we jump to conclusions about becoming rich, let’s see what kind of riches Paul wants us to have. The verse continues - “That they may have all the riches that assurance brings…” So, assurance brings riches... We will come back to that idea. For now, let’s consider how Paul expects us to have assurance. He goes on saying, “in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ.” What is the “mystery”?

Paul clarifies that it is Jesus! In other places in scripture, the “mystery” is the gospel. So we can understand the mystery to be Jesus and the work He did on earth to bring salvation to humankind. Paul goes on to say that in Jesus is all wisdom and knowledge and he names these things as “treasures”!

To summarize Paul here:
Riches = assurance. And we have assurance by understanding Jesus and what He did for us.
Treasure = wisdom and knowledge. And we find wisdom and knowledge in Jesus because He has it all!

So Paul wants us to be rich and have treasure! And that means that we would have assurance because we know Jesus and understand the gospel - what Jesus accomplished through his death and resurrection. And he wants us to have treasure - wisdom and knowledge through Jesus!

That brings us to the question - is assurance really riches? Let’s think about that.

If I was sure of what God thinks of me, I would be ….
If I was sure of my place in the kingdom of God, I would be…..
If I was sure about God’s love for me, I would be…..
If I knew Jesus better, I would be…
If I found my wisdom and knowledge in Jesus, I would be….

So what do you think? Are you rich if you have assurance in Jesus?

Prayer Focus for today:
Ask God to show you what He thinks of you. Sit with Him in His love and allow Him to assure you.

Then ask God to show you what He thinks of someone else in the room. If prompted by God, share your impression with them - either through a note or by telling them personally.

Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that God is able to do far beyond what we ask or even think — not because we dream big enough, but because His power is already at work.

Notice where Paul locates that power. It is not distant or future. It is within us. Abundance is not something God sprinkles on from afar; it is something He works through His Spirit in the lives of His people. What God intends to do around us begins with what He is doing within us.

This verse also reorders our expectations. God’s abundance is not limited by the size of our prayers or the reach of our imagination. He is able to exceed both. Yet the focus of the passage is not the outcome — it is the Giver. Paul moves quickly from possibility to praise.

The result of God’s abundant work is glory — in the church and in Christ Jesus. Abundance is never meant to terminate on us. It is meant to point beyond us. When God works powerfully in His people, the church becomes a visible testimony of His glory across generations.

As we look toward the future, we do not anchor our hope in what we can ask or envision. We anchor it in the God who is already at work — trusting that His power will produce far more than we could ever plan, and that His glory will be the final result.

Prayer Focus for today:
“What God intends to do around us begins with what He is doing within us.” Sometimes, we can see what God is doing within us. Other times, it is more difficult and it is helpful when someone points it out. We had been through the National Parks in Utah and had stood at the edge and overlooked many awesome canyons. I figured the Grand Canyon would be similar. I was wrong. Standing there, overlooking a canyon that is over a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide and goes on for 277 miles long, you begin to think that perhaps you haven’t ever actually seen something “big” before. Looking at the Grand Canyon, I realized that I can’t really even comprehend how big it is. It is too vast, too deep, too grand.

People have tried to express how awesome God is, how amazing, how holy, how powerful and wise he is and yet, even those who have spent a lifetime seeking him and loving him find that there is still more!

In this passage, Paul tries to express God’s greatness and he quotes multiple other scripture passages in his attempt. God is so amazingly great that He is beyond our ability to describe Him and He is beyond our scope of understanding. It is not that God is unknowable, it is that our knowledge and understanding of Him will never compare to His greatness.

God himself holds all that is together. Nothing exists apart from Him and all exists for Him and because of Him. He has power and greatness and wisdom and riches beyond our imagination! He is abundant! There is nothing lacking in Him. He has no weakness. No blind spot. No need. He never makes a mistake. He never judges incorrectly. He has all the power to accomplish His goals and nothing is beyond Him. He is the source of all! He is the source of abundance.

Considering God is sort of like standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon and trying to grasp how big it is. It is there before you, but even while looking at it, it is difficult to comprehend. God is vast! He is limitless. He is amazing. And He loves you. He wants you to know Him, to be with Him and to accept His love for you.

Prayer Focus for today:
Give your best shot at describing God.
