Day 10

Titus 3:4–8 (NIV)

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
We have just come out of the Christmas season, and the phrases of some songs still linger in my heart, especially this lyric from “O Holy Night”: “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘til He appeared, and the soul felt it’s worth.” The world was then (and is now, one might argue) struggling with the weight of sin and human errors in judgment, morality and good sense. The verses just before this passage say “Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.” (Titus 3:3)

BUT GOD – in His great mercy – “appeared” to us in the person of Jesus! Into the darkness of that night and of that cultural moment, He came and shone His light into the world. And by the light of that one miraculous life, everything changed for those who believed that He was the Son of God. Jesus embodied the ABUNDANT kindness and love of our Heavenly Father who wants to repair and restore our relationship with Him. It doesn’t depend on anything that we do to earn His favor or gain His acceptance or approval. He saved us! He has already done all the work on our behalf. That is how much worth we have in His eyes.

And the gift doesn’t end there! He has also showered upon us the Holy Spirit to empower and instruct and lead us. If we earnestly seek Him and follow His lead, we will have everything that we need to live a life that honors and points to God.
Prayer Focus for today:
Today, reflect upon this generous nature of God – that He came to us right in the midst of our darkness and didn’t hold anything back. He didn’t have to do that. But He did. Does that change your perception of how much He values you? He knows our needs. He is not unaware of our weaknesses and struggles. And He came anyway! Let’s all fall on our knees to our Savior and our Friend!
